Problem Talk - 2

multi step problems for school mathsA number of members have asked for another series of the two-stage problems that featured in our original Problem Talk resource.

Here is the result: a set of 20 multi-step written problems, these are specifically designed to offer appropriate challenge for Y2 and Y3 children.

This is an excellent activity for either the introductory or plenary part of a maths lesson; it is particularly useful when children can work together on mini whiteboards.

The written problems could also be used as part of group activity. Naturally, the focus is on the 'mathematical talk' and the decisions the children make regarding the problem, rather than on the actual "answer".

As before, this works really well when children are paired into thinking partners. Print out the file and cut each page into separate strips - each containing one written problem. Give each child a problem slip, and ask the pair to take it in turns to read the problem and discuss how it could be attacked. Encourage them to explain what mathematical functions they think they need to apply in order to solve the problem, and to decide on the order of those functions.

The 5 page pdf file contains a brief introduction and 20 multi-step problems, such as:

It's great to know you listen

It's great to know you listen to requests and feedback. I was one of those who asked for something like this and I can't wait to put it into use. You've saved me straining my tired brain again.
