Problem Talk

Maths Word ProblemsHere's a maths activity focused on helping children to work out what to do when faced with a two-stage problem.

Working with thinking partners, each child has a problem slip and they take it in turns to read it out and discuss how it could be attacked; discussing what maths functions they need to apply in order to solve the problem. Importantly, they must also decide on the order of those functions and be prepared to explain everything to the rest of the class.

This is a very useful activity for either the introductory or plenary phase of a lesson with children working together on mini whiteboards. The maths problems could also be used as part of group activity. Naturally, the focus is on the 'mathematical talk' and the decisions the children make regarding the problem rather than on the actual "answer".

The suggested problems here could easily be adapted or enhanced. In a following session the children could be asked to create their own problems, using these as a template, but focussing on specific concepts: subtraction and percentages, for example.

The 6 page pdf file contains 30 two-step problmes. Here are three examples:

Exmple two step math problems

We are currently putting together a collection of differentiated problems - so call back if you would like to see more 'difficult' (or 'easier') problems.

This is a fantastic resource

This is a fantastic resource - really gets my year 7's thinking hard about which operations to use and improves their range of mathematical language - fab, thank you! :-) Nicola

Excellent.   We have been doing a lot of work on discussions in maths and getting teh children to talk through how they approach problems. It is having a noticeable effect already, so very pleased to see this resource.

Another excellent activity

Another excellent activity which makes children think in different ways. I use these as an independent activity for groups on a table at the start of a lesson. Children come in and it's waiting for them. Brilliant fun way of learning and the children love it. Also gives me a chance to complete any last minute preps for the rest of the lesson!!

I love the look of these

I love the look of these problem solving cards but think they would be a little difficult for my Year 1's at the moment. Any possibility of some easier questions/problems for them please?

Jo, Yes, the problems here

Jo, Yes, the problems here were intended for older children - we are currently putting together a large collection of similar problems ... they will definitely be online soon!

I love using mixed ability

I love using mixed ability talk activities to help engage reluctant mathematicians from the start of a lesson or to help them focus (and me assess understanding) when used as mini plenaries during the lesson. However, not being the best mathematician, it can take me ages to think of problems to use so this is a fantastic time saving resource - thank you!

This is really useful. I'll look forward to your differentiated version, but in the meantime I am going to copy the problems onto card and use my own simple symbol code system on the cards to target them at different ability groups. Thanks for another great resource.
