Make 20

number bonds to 20This is a 'Word Search' inspired activity.

Each card features a 10 by 10 grid of numbers. The children have the challenge of finding a line of four numbers that total 20. Each board features 12 or 14 such strings of numbers.

If the cards are laminated the children can be encouraged to work together with white-board pens to find as many as they can.

The lines which total 20 only run horizontally or vertically, and all of the numbers have been chosen with care - this is not computer generated selection, each set has been purposefully created to offer the children a reasonable amount of challenge.

The sheets could also be used as a homework activity.

The downloadable pdf file includes three challenge grids together with answers. The whole lot looks like this:

There are a further 10 Make 20 grids available for mathsicks+ members, follow the link below for more information.

Another great resource, thank you. At the risk of being picky though, would it be possible to include instructions to games in the downloads too?!

Another great resource. I

Another great resource. I have printed these with the Make 10 cards on the back and then laminated them so that the children can move onto bonds to 20 when they are ready. I often print resources with a similar purpose/theme back to back as it reduces storage and saves on card and laminating pouches. You just have to make sure that you don't want both resources at the same time for two different groups of children!

This is great. I used it on

This is great. I used it on my interactive whiteboard , but instead of doing it vertiaclly or horizontally, I let the children find any numbers that were touching that would add to 20 (so some of them made 'L' shapes. It was a bit easier for my notso-hotsos.

I downloaded these last week

I downloaded these last week and have never seen children so eager to get started... To start with they wrote down all the bonds to 10 on whiteboards and then used that to help them find the answers in the grid, then on subsequent games, I found that they weren't referring back to their whiteboards at all and the bonds are now beginning to stick!!! A wonderful idea, yet so simple. Thank you so much!
