Using and Applying - Number Properties

Problem Solving - number properties activityIn this activity the children are given 6 statements and asked to use them to work out what unique number they all relate to.

All 6 statements will direct them to one specific number. As you might expect, this is strong on 'Using and Applying' number knowledge, as well as involving children in exploring number properties and developing their vocabulary.

To use the resource, print out the 6 page download*, cut each page into strips, keep the last strip (which shows the answer) to one side, and place the remaining 6 clues inside an envelope. I label each envelope: A, B C, D, E and F (to help with reassembling the clues later)

Number Properties - clue cards

Each group, or pair, of children is given a different envelope and challenged to use the clues to identify the number.

For this to work, the children need to be familiar with a range of number property concepts, such as: place value, multiples, odd and even, prime numbers, square numbers, triangular numbers and Fibonacci numbers.

 Used this with my year 5 class last week and they loved it - motivated even the maths-averse and was great for the very able. Also prompted discussion of Fibonacci which we hadn't covered at that stage, Many Thanks.

This has been really useful and the children enjoyed the acivity. I am going to use this as a template for the children tomake their own comments and then share them with the rest of the class to 'test' them.

This activity was fantastic

This activity was fantastic with my year 6 pupils. Giving them the whole sheet whilst I held the answers and only gave them when they thought they had the answer. What I liked about it was the chance for the pupils to choose which information was the most useful to them and choose the order of the statements rather than start at the top and work their way down. Really good for number skills as well as strategy. Also great for APP. Thank you

This is such a fantastic

This is such a fantastic resource and it was great to see it in action via the Teachers' TV clip. I was pondering the possibility of creating a simplified version for younger/less able mathematicians. Maybe using concepts such as odd/even, greater than/less than, when added to x creates y, that kind of thing. What do others think?

We used this activity in the

We used this activity in the hall. All children sat in a large circle and were randomly allocated a card. They then had the excitement of finding the rest of their group before solving the puzzle. After a couple of rounds each group was given 6 pieces of paper to make up their own clues to swap with another group.Good fun on a wet day to add interest to their lesson!!

I can't wait to use this

I can't wait to use this game/activity. I think once the students have deduced their mystery number through several of the sets, I'll have the students create their own set of clues to have another work group solve. I think being able to make a solvable set of clues will be an accurate assessment of a student's understanding of this aspect of number sense.
