Dominoes - Higher or Lower

mathematics place value activityThis is a quick and easy maths game to help reinforce the concept of place value.

The game works best with 3 to 4 players. There's no gameboard and nothing to download this time. You only need a set of dominoes and a handful of counters to use as scorekeepers.

The game relies upon the feature of dominoes that they can be used to show two different two digit numbers. For example:

2-4 domino in the place value game

At the start of the game, the players spread and mix the set of dominoes face-down between them. Each player then selects six unseen dominoes.

domino place value gameThe first player chooses one of his dominoes, looks at it and decides whether it would be best to play it as a High Number, or a Low Number. Let's say the first player is Bill, and he has chosen a 2:4 domino. He places it on the table to show 42 and decides to call: "Highest Number".

The other players now look at their dominoes and try to find one that will 'beat' 42. The second player chooses a 3:4 domino and plays it as 43.

The third player however, can make 51 with his 1:5 domino. In this case, the third player wins the round and receives a counter.

The line of dominoes is placed aside and the next player lays one of his dominoes down saying whether he is aiming for  a High Number, or a Low Number.

Who can win the most counters? Can the children decide whether it is purely down to luck and the selection of dominoes... or whether careful play can ensure a 'good player' always wins? Older children may also be able to develop a clear strategy as to which domino to play at each turn.

Wow this sounds like a fantastic idea. I'm sure many of us have many resources collecting dust on our shelves which can be utilised or adapted to suit many groups of learners. A very simple, yet effective and impressive idea. Cheers!

Great use of dominoes- will use this idea alongside your extending ladders resource. The competitive element to the game will encourage pupils to think carefully about their choices!

I found this an excellent way

I found this an excellent way to make the children think about the value of each digit in a 2-digit number. Any more domino ideas?

Hi John! Each of the children

Hi John! Each of the children have a small pack that contain a variety of equipment, such as a calculator; tape measure; set of dominoes; set of counters; dice; set of number cards; set of cubes; and so on. I saw the idea at a PD course that I went on - it is so much easier for the children to each have their own 'pack' rather than having to hand out the equipment for each lesson, and it also means that the equipment is being used rather thatn sitting on a shelf or in a cupboard. It's great for early finishes are well as they can play a game and have all the equipment ready to go. Happy to share! :0) Maree

What a fab idea! All the children in my class have a set of dominoes in their Maths Packs so I am always looking for new ideas on how to use them. A great activity for my early finishers!

Thankyou, mareefrost. I like the sound of those Maths Packs... if you don't mind sharing ;-) could you tell us what else they contain? It might be useful to start a new 'resource' section listing these sort of every-day useful, practical resources.
