An Odd (and Even) Little Race

odd and even gameThis is a mathematical racing game. It is designed to give  children plenty of (social) opportunites to reinforce their ability to recognise odd and even numbers.

You will need the downloadable board*, 1 dice, 2 counters and 2 children. The game works well for children of equal ability. However, sine there is a strong element of luck and anyone can win, it can be equally appropriate for children working with more (or less) able partners.

The game is a circular race, with the winner being the player who catches up with (or overtakes) their partner.

At the start of the game, one player chooses to play only odd numbers and places his or her counter on the Odd starting space. The other player puts his or her counter on the Even space.
Players now take turns to roll the dice. But they do not take it in turns to move - the dice decides that!mathsticks game for odd and even numbers - free download
If the number on the dice is odd the Odd player moves around the board that number of squares. If the number is even the Even player moves.

This one worked well for me with Y1 children - see how it works for you. Once again, the best learning (and teaching) happens within the conversation the children have while they are playing; encourage them to use appropriate vocabulary and to share the strategies they have for recognising odd-ness and even-ness.

Thanks for this, my class had great fun playing it. Funny how when it comes to playing against a partner their reconition of odd and even numbers improves tenfold!!! We've also played an odd and even game in the style of 'Rock,Paper, Scissors'. In pairs one person will be 'odd' and the other 'even'. Both partners make a fist and on the count of 3 open the fist and hold up either 1,2,3,4.or 5 fingers. They then count the total number of fingers held up and if it's an odd number then a point is awarded to the 'odd' person and likewise if it's an even number. (This also led to a discussion on how to record this and revising tallying!) The first to reach 10 was the winner and then we swapped over so that both partners had a turn at being 'odd' and 'even'.

What a fun way to practise

What a fun way to practise recognising odd/even numbers! The children I worked with last year got so good at it they used 20 sided dice and only move one square if number was above 9.It makes a change not taking turns. Another favourite of all who have played it! Thank you

Excellent idea. There are so few games to practice this concept. Love the idea of using different dice. Will play it with larger numbers BUT the children will have to land on top of their opponent. This means I can use it with different year groups.
