Counting Posters

Couting Posters for young childrenThis a set of Counting Posters for the numbers 1 to 10 for classroom display. Unlike most similar counting resources however, these are designed to clearly demonstrate the changing magnitude of the numbers.

Many 'old-style' resources have a number of flaws which can actually hinder children's early ability to recognize quantities. For example, some show the single unitary image (1) as a large picture; occupying more space than any other picture. This can send mixed messages for early learners.

Counting Posters for school

Also, the layout of the images often differs for each number. This can make it difficult for children to compare one number to another.

The following mathstick designs use identical sized, colourful and meaningful images on each A4 poster. The images are organised in a clear mathematical pattern to highlight the quantity and also help children easily visualise even and odd numbers. Counting array - visual resource for early years mathsSure, this makes number 1 look rather odd and lonely; and number 10 a little crowded... but that's the whole idea!

This is a reworking of a child-created set of posters I used some years ago. If you use them, please let me know how you (and the children) get on.

The download* is a 10 page, A4 pdf file.

I love the way these have the numeral and an image to go with the numeral. I am going to put these up at child height and see if the pupils can put them in the correct order, even notice when I have swapped two cards over.  Thank you.

I agree, I teach kindergarten

I agree, I teach kindergarten and these cards are great but since kindergarten standards require students to know #s to 30 it would be a helpful resource. The only challenge is that those cards would be lerger, since the images are the same size...tricky.

I think it is a really sensible idea to have the items the same size each time, definately less confusing for younger children.
