Squashy Boxes

Squashy Boxes - mathematics teaching resourceHere's another versatile (and often overlooked) resource. Squashy Boxes enable children to quickly generate 'random' numbers. They are a simple but effective tool for practising a range of rapid recall and mental calculation strategies.

Squashy Boxes are easy to make,  'pack flat', have hundreds of uses and are easy for children to manipulate;  children can also store them in their own drawers or book bags.

This downloadable pdf file* includes templates for six Squashy Boxes (plus a blank template) together with extensive teacher notes and ideas for maths activities for both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children. Please note: mathstick boxes have been specifically designed to reduce the occurance of duplicate numbers - it's not just a random selection!

Make up the boxes as follows:

1.Print out the template onto thin card.Making a squashy box
2.Protect with tacky-back plastic, if you wish.
3.Fold along all of the vertical lines
4.Fold into a cuboid shape and glue the final blank column (tab) behind the first.

The resulting cuboid, if held gently, can be turned to show four different faces – each with a different arrangement of single digit numbers. If the cuboid is squashed onto a table it can be made to show four different arrangements of 2-Digit numbers.

The mathstick characters at the top of each face are there to help children identify which 'face' they are using.

Random number resources for teachers

Children can now use these to (for example):

  • identify odd/even numbers
  • identify largest/smallest number
  • identify numbers smaller/larger than __
  • say which number has __ tens/units
  • count on and back in tens/hundreds
  • partition numbers
  • generate random numbers for use in calculations

Thank you - I used a version of these one time on supply, so much easier than finding enough dice, or full sets of digit cards.

I am a secondary maths

I am a secondary maths teacher but my mother is a year 1 primary teacher who is struggling to teach maths I have been trying to support her in finding rich resources but so many websites designed for primary teachers just have endless worksheets on them. This is an excellent resource that I know she will be able to use tomorrow! Thank you from both of us

Smalley, thank you so much

Smalley, thank you so much for your comment. As always, it is good to know that these maths games and resources are beign used and enjoyed. I did, originally, set up the site to share ideas as a direct result of seeing so very many internet sites pushing worksheets and mundane activities. I'm glad to hear that the work here continues to be appreciated.

I absolutely love these

I absolutely love these squashy boxes. We use them all the time in my Year 1 class - often as a quick 5 minute warm up - find an odd/even number; tell me the number one/two more/less than your number; count on from your number by 1s, 2s; count backwards from your number ... So many fabulous ways to use this resource. Thanks again.

Such a fabulous resource.

Such a fabulous resource. I have been doing supply work for a couple of years and have seen these squashy boxes being used all over the county. I have been trying to get my hands on my own set and I am so pleased that I have now found this extremely useful download. Great idea and so useful for all sorts of activities. I have used them this week for number pairs to 10 and 20. DR1506, NE England
