Flip Flops Again

Counting challengesFollowing a couple of requests I have repackaged the original maths starter activity (the original Flip Flop design) in two ways:

- a larger, A3 format, so you can use the counting activities with larger groups of children.

- a set of mini Flip Flops, each counting grid is 8.5cm square.

The smaller sized Flip Flops are the result of a teacher telling me she has had great results letting her children use them to:

  • experiment with number bonds for themselves
  • challenge themselves by folding the sheet on a table - "I can see 6 faces, how many are hidden?"
  • challenge each other - "I am showing you 2 faces, how many are on my side"
  • respond to questions by folding the Flip Flop to show specific quantities

For details of counting activities and how to use/fold them, see the original Flip Flop post.

 I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these! Had similar type of thing years ago when I first qualified but for multiplication purposes with KS2, rather than number bonds. These are really lovely and looking forward to trying them out with the children's versions. Great resource.

I made a kind of flip flop

I made a kind of flip flop with my daughter a while ago and she loved it so much I've been looking for an excuse to use it in school. Now that you have attached 'educational value' to them there'll be no stopping me! I'm also always looking for ways of reinforcing number bonds to 10, so thanks.

The flip flops were a hit - very engaging. When they played off against each other and the shouting became too loud I asked them to use their fingers rather than yelling out the answer. Thanks!

I use these regularly as a class and the children have individual flip flops for pair work. Good for introducing number bonds and increasing pace of their recall.
