Factors and Products - a maths game

multiplication baord gameThis is a great little mathematics game for two players. The focus is on reinforcing the concepts of 'factors and products'; perfect for later Key Stage 1 or early Key Stage 2.

The downloadable board* features a track around which the children move counters in response to the fall of a dice.

Each move requires the children to calculate, and (importantly) discuss the nature of the numbers. The numbers on the board have been carefully chosen to ensure children have plenty to talk about! In my experience, teachers love the mathematical discussions this promotes, while children enjoy the 'thrill' of the game and the joy of developing their understandng by sharing their skills.

The (pdf) download* features the mathsticks 'Track Attack' board, and detailed teacher notes with suggestions for alternative modes of play.

Take it for a spin and let me know how it worked with your children.

Played this yesterday and the children loved it! They were using super explanations as to how to find numbers with factors of 2 and 5 quickly. Speed of calculations were increased due to competition side of game.

My class played this yesterday - and I wish I had introduced it to them before! We have been battling with factors for a while, but yesterday was the lightbulb moment for everyone :)They were engaged, were talking the talk and were happy playing the game for the duration of the lesson. Brilliant resource, cannot recommend it enough - THANK YOU!!

That's good to hear. Great that it worked well. For me, language is the key to learning... that's always been my guiding aim when making/using resources: what meaningful vocabulary will the children be able to use while working with this?

Thanks

@soniag123, thank you for the comment. You are quite right, the key to good understandign is in enabling the children to explain the mathematics they are using; giving them opportunities to talk about what (and how) they are learning. Games are great for this.

track attack resource

after having read through the resource, its application in the classroom is clear. in ks2 it has been stressed more and more the importance of students explaining how and why something is done (part of decision making), as opposed to having "tricks" to solve something. thank you for the simple to use resource, and i'm a little annoyed that i didn't come up with it myself.
