Just as the Government swings the focus back on ‘arithmetic’ and away from ‘mathematics’ Shyama Perera made me smile with this statement in the Telegraph:
She then outlines the games she played with her children to engender both a love for, and an ability with, mathematics. And goes on to lament the innumeracy (The Telegraph writer’s feel is) gripping the nation. Her article (you may guess) is part of that newspaper’s “Make Britain Count” campaign. When choosing his campaign themes the editor is bravely waging war down the path of least resistance…. Even so, that shouldn’t prevent us from enjoying another of Shyama’s comments. And this is the one that first caught my eye and made me write up this rather than watch the end of Poirot; simply because the reading of it coincided serendipitously with the appearance of a commercial for some nefarious ”WeLend-U-Money.com” website.
Yes, Shyama, I agree: Numeracy is as important as literacy. Let’s put it back at the heart of learning.
