Mathematical Story Books that Involve Early Counting and Counting Rhymes
We are in the process of updating and moving our Book Reviews to our Blog - Mathsticks/Extra
A counting book which does much more. Like "We All Went on Safari" (above) this maths based book is packed with information about the life and culture of another country; in this case, South Africa. The book is illustrated by wonderful images from Oxfam photographers.
In the story, a young girl, Nothando, grows and harvests a pumpkin seed - this produces plenty of opportunites to count from 1 to 10. However, it is also the additional images and text, about the growing of plants and crops, shopping, travelling, food preparation, family meals and much more that makes this book a delight.
A fun counting book which shows just what can be done with only ten little black dots: one, on its own can become the sun, two together can form the eyes of a fox... what about three, or four... or more.
Fun, entertaining and creative, all in one package.

One little monster plus 49 monstrous party guests add up to a jumping, splashing, racing, dancing, unforgettable birthday celebration - and you are invited too!
A wonderfully inviting and colourful book - a fantastic, fun, joyous celebration of counting.
A great book to read at home, or to use as a teaching focus.
How Scary! Who Scares Who from 1 to 10

Great fun, colourful and very inviting. Young children love the Scooby Doo style 'spookiness' in this novel mathematics book.
As the information on the back of the book says: "Counting from one to ten has never been such an adventure! Meet a different hairy, scary and ferociuos creature on each page until you reach the biggest surprise of all..."
My Granny Went to Market: A Round-the-world Counting Rhyme

Fly away with Granny as she takes a magic carpet ride around the world, collecting a steadily increasing number of souvenirs from each exotic location! The familiar tale is brought up-to-date in this beautifully illustrated book. In a similar way to 'One Seed' (above) this book proveds some welcome additional information: clear illustrations of traditional dress and images of the countries Granny visited.
